Rodney Mullen is Hip-Hop #Prekill
The movement alone is poetic. The philosophy behind his craft is sharp and technical in the most nuanced of ways. Understanding that comes from application, application that comes from spirit, and the passionate that only comes from deep down. We find these things that connect in this way, we call them hobbies, we call it fun, we sometimes dismiss it and don’t call it our calling.
There’s this choice that can be made. There’s this extreme we can easily reach if we choose to go completely in. To repurpose one of the favorite interviews I’ve seen, Rodney Mullen mentions to Tom Bilyeu mentions that all he did was create a language for others after him to express themselves. This is what the creative offers the world. This is why tech is at such a prominent status in our world today. These are architects creating worlds and opportunities to connect expression. Imagine the creator of something that seems as trivial as emojis. This is the day and age where those ideas are created and form entirely new opportunities for people to communicate. Through Project Newsense we have our own version of expression. The Believe Series was a mash up of spoken word, rap, and ambiance. Yes it connected with a few, maybe it takes hold later, what matters is the creation of it. The idea to build platform. Invention doesn’t always take off immediately, the timing isn’t always in line with the consensus needed to be reached. With more understanding of what it is about the art that I’ve connected with, I am able to see that connection in new areas and therefore learning to create opportunity to connect. Yes indeed, this black culture can and should transcend sports and entertainment. I recognize that, and therefore my aim increases with depth and accuracy.
